She had done everything that she could to get attention. She had worn the sluttiest clothes at school. She had flirted relentlessly. The teacher's didn't seem to notice, nor had her siblings. Mr. Snyder didn't even notice her! What was it going to take? Yasmine felt like yelling. Was she really invisible? Was her skin completely translucent? It didn't help any that her father had really taken her seriously and didn't show up to pick her up. She sat on the couch, feeling like an idiot because she had her backpack filled with clothes, waiting for dad. What happened next set her off.
Willow was talking with their sister and mother. They started to sit down for dinner. It was then that Willow said "oh, you're here. You gonna eat?"
Of course she was there! She had been there all along! But apparently, she didn't notice. Nobody noticed. Standing up, Yasmine yelled at her older sister, but she was directing it at all of them. She yelled that nobody cared, nobody noticed. Of course, Willow had called her a drama queen. Grabbing her backpack, she had yelled out that she wished she was dead and ran to her room, slamming the door. Tears were streaming down her face by then. She paced back and forth. Things were so much better when she had been in California with her mom when she was younger. Back when her mom actually cared enough to take her to Hollywood with her to shoot a movie. She missed California. And then it hit her. She would leave. She would go back to California. Nobody would ever miss her, anyways.
She grabbed a piece of paper. Yasmine paused, thinking about what to put. Finally, she just decided that she would be simple. GOODBYE. That was all it said. She then reached behind her dresser, where she had hidden her diary and her jar where she kept all of her savings and stuffed them in the backpack. She had a little over four thousand dollars. After all, she never spent her allowance. Not since she was ten. Wiping her tears from her eyes, she tossed her backpack out of the window and climbed out, making her way down the tree. Jumping to the ground, she then grabbed her bag and slung it on her shoulder. Making her way to where her bike was parked, Yas quickly mounted it, kicked off the brake, and set off.
Tears blurred her vision as she made her way to the airport. Using her cash, she bought herself a ticket to Los Angeles, California, USA. Leaving her bike for security to take and keep, she went through security before following the agent's directions to the gate. There was no stopping her now. Nobody who went after her would be able to get to the gate. Like anyone would. They wouldn't even notice her gone. Life would go on as usual in the Santos home. With a sigh, Yasmine pulled out a book--the newest one by Judas Darwin-- and opened it to the first page. It didn't take long to get engrossed. Soon enough, she was lost in a world of horror and blood--which, really, wasn't all that different from Toronto. She had gotten through three chapters before she heard it.
"Now boarding aisles seven through ten." Her head jerked up. That was her. Standing up, she slipped a bookmark in her book and got in line, ticket in hand. It only took a few minutes to be on her way on the airplane. She bit her lip as she looked for her seat, and was glad that she was beside a window. Slipping past the passenger in the aisle seat, she sat down and heaved a sigh. She went back to reading, this time slipping her mp3 player headphones in her ears. It was another twenty minutes before the plane was slowly moving, and then taking off in the air. She was finally going where she belonged. Where she wouldn't be invisible. Where there would be nobody around to disappoint her.
