Matt stared at his paper. "I should be president because." Because what? He couldn't even think of what to say. His dad would know, but his dad was off at law school. He didn't even want to bother with his other dad. He loved Marco, But Ben was gonna be a lawyer. And he was really good with arguing and getting his way. He proved that often enough, especially with his dad. The ten year old finally got frustrated and grabbed the paper, tearing it in half, crumpling it up and throwing it across the room. This was dumb. He wasn't going to get the kids to vote for him. Who wanted to vote for a band geek?
He went outside, deciding to catch a frog. It was going to be his new pet. He would name it Kermit. Maybe that would take his mind off of school council. Stroking the amphibian, he carried him inside. But, as his parents continuously reminded him, frogs were meant to be wild. And Kermit decided he wanted to be back outside after he was carried upstairs. The frog jumped out of his hands and hopped right into Jessa's room.

It was strange. Being in a new foster home. But she was use to not staying in one place forever. Most homes she went into, Jessa was in for 3, maybe 4 months. Face it. Who wanted a kid like her? At the young age of 9, Jessa had learned that she was not particularly a good catch. Who wanted a damaged kid? Who wanted a child in her condition? But it was not fair. Just was not. Jessa had always dreamed of having parents and brothers and sisters. She dreamed of having a family that truly loved her.
Jessa went upstairs to her room, leaving the door opened. She hardly ever closed her bedroom door. She did not see the point in doing so. She was sitting on her bed, a book in her lap, reading. At her age, she was so into reading. It was a way to escape reality. She could be anything that she wanted rather than some 9-year-old freak. Which was exactly what she was. A freak. And then she heard something. It sounded like an animal. She looked up from her book as she watched a frog hop into her room. She smiled and set her book down on the bed, before kneeling down on the floor. She picked it up. “Hey, little guy.” She spoke, petting it.

Matt didn't understand fully what his parents had said about the new girl. Mostly because they talked in circles. She was different and he had to not play rough. That was pretty much what he gleaned from it. They had just gotten her that morning, early before he woke up. They talked with him, Aidan, and Jason the night before. He was being careful like he was told. He hadn't disturbed her. And it wasn't his fault the frog went into her room.
He peeked inside the room before going in. "Hey, Christmas." Those were the first words he had spoken to her. It was a good name. He had woken up to a new sister. Like Christmas. Besides, he couldn't remember her name. He watched her closely. "Aren't you afraid of getting warts or something?" That was what most girls were afraid of. Like the girl down the street, Mary. She wouldn't even let her clothes get wrinkled. And she always wore dresses.
But maybe she would be different. After all, she was coming into a house with all guys. She had to be brave. "I'm Matt. The cool guy downstairs is Jason. He's the most awesome teenager around. Seriously. And the kid who will be sneaking in here to try to wear your clothes is Aidan. He's half pet, half brother. If he bugs you too much, just call me. I pretty much control him. That's all of us. Just us guys. We're not exactly used to women folk. But you look ok to me. Welcome to the family." Should he hug her? He wasn't sure. So for now, he held back. Besides, she might not want a hug.
