Overall Personality: Lucy has is very emotionally unstable. She can quickly go from the happiest person in the world to the most distraught person in the world, without really knowing why. She has a limited understanding of herself and why she is the way she is. She also has limited understanding of the world. If she were asked how old she is, the thirty-eight year old would say that she is six. Thus, she behaves like a six year old. A person who isn’t trained to work with her would have to be careful in dealing with her.
Because she is mentally off, Lucy has really bad tantrums. When she gets upset, she will back up in a corner and anyone who tries to calm her can wind up bitten or kicked. She sometimes puts others in danger without understanding that is what she is doing. If she is grabbed while she is upset, it makes things worse. In extreme cases, she claws and scratches and has even drawn blood.

Background:Lucy was born the second child, with one older brother. At first, everything seemed to be normal. She was a quiet baby, but her parents didn’t think that was anything to be concerned about. She was taken home, introduced to her older brother, who was two at the time, and shown around at the baby shower. Her parents took the best of care of their baby. And for the first five months, they were very happy. It was when Lucy was six months old that problems started to arise.
Victoria was home alone with the children. She had set Lucy down on the couch, and left the room for just a moment. All of a sudden, she heard a thud. She went rushing to her baby, who had fallen off the couch and landed on the floor. But it wasn’t until she picked her up that Lucy started crying. The delay in response scared her mother, and she immediately called her husband and took her child to the doctor.
The problem turned out to be lack of oxygen to the brain. For the next six months, Lucy underwent oxygen treatments. They monitored her very carefully. Once the treatments were finished, they continued to watch Lucy and test her every six months. When she was five, and started school, she was finally assessed for any problems in her cognitive development. And that was when, once more, Lucy and her parents were brought in front of doctors.
The doctors explained that unfortunately, Lucy was developmentally delayed. He was sure that if she was put in special education classes, she would be able to finish school. She would be able to get a minimum wage job. And eventually, with some help, she might even be able to get her own apartment. Lucy didn’t have the brightest of futures when compared with what society considered normal. But, she would have a future. But it wasn’t enough for Nigel. No child of his was going to be retarded. He demanded to know other options.
It was then that the doctors mentioned, off the record, that they could conduct electro-shock therapy. They said that, while too risky to recommend on record, it may be able to give Lucy’s brain cells the boost they needed to have her functioning normally. It was suggested that the parents go home and think about it, perhaps pray if they were religious people, and figure out what they wanted to do. But that wasn’t going to happen. It didn’t take Nigel two seconds for him to come to his decision. He told them to do it.
The electro-shock therapy sessions started out weekly. At first, they were helping. Lucy was beginning to pick up the language that other children her age were using. As the treatments continued, though, and Lucy turned six, Nigel decided that they weren’t working as quickly as he wanted them to. At her last treatment that they took her to, Lucy’s dad demanded that they give her the dosage that they would give an adult. During the treatment, the child started seizing. The doctors wanted to end it, but Nigel insisted that his kids were tougher than that. They could handle anything. At the end of the treatment, the seizure continued for ten minutes. The doctor refused to give her any more treatments. But by then, it was too late.
The damage was already done. Over the next couple of weeks, Lucy’s development actually went backwards. She was no longer able to read. She didn’t know how to use the toilet. She even stopped talking. Instead, the six year old grunted and groaned. What made it worse, was when her younger brother, Danny, took a toy from her, Lucy acted out violently and attacked the four year old. Once more, she was taken to the doctor to find out what to do.
Lucy would have to re-learn everything. She would have to be potty trained once more, learn how to talk, how to read. And only time would tell if her mentality would grow past six years old. Despite being responsible for his daughter’s state, Nigel was the one who decided they couldn’t take care of her. Suddenly, she became more of a liability than a daughter. And he found the best home money could buy and admitted his child there. She never saw her parents again.
Lucy did learn how to talk, read, write, use the toilet. But she never grew past age six. When she was thirteen, she got a cist on her ovaries, and even though he refused to let his family see her, her father told them to go ahead and remove the ovaries. It put the teenager into an early menopause, but he knew that it would save her the confusion of puberty and if anything inappropriate were to happen, he wouldn’t have to risk having retarded grandchildren.
So there she has stayed, with the exception of the occasion when she runs away and tries to go home. Lucy is now thirty-eight years old, with the thinking that she is only six. She does occasionally gets visits from her brothers, who she always mistakes them for her father. And she really doesn’t understand why she is stuck in the home. She wants to go back with her family, but has been told time and again that will not be happening. Lucy continues to hope that they will change their minds.
