Overall Personality: Nathan is entirely protective of everyone who lives with him. He keeps a close eye on his daughters as well as Kari and Tessa, because he doesn’t want anything to happen to him. He is definitely overprotective. When one of the kids has a field trip, he always makes sure to chaperone, just for his peace of mind. He wants to make sure that nothing happens to them while they are gone. He trusts his kids completely, but doesn’t trust the world around them.
Nathan has always been a rescuer-kind of guy. If he knows that someone is in trouble, he will give the shirt off his back to help them. No matter the cost, he will always make sure to give them what they needed. When Kari called him, he welcomed her and her daughter into his home. It’s not to the extreme point that Larisa takes it—he has to actually KNOW someone to bring them into his house. But if there’s anything Nathan can’t resist, it’s a damsel in distress.
Unfortunately, Nathan can be, to a point, a mommy-pleaser. Being Vivian Forrester’s oldest child, he has always felt like he owes her in some way. Which has been the reason that whenever she felt it proper to intervene in his life, Nathan let her. When she decided that he needed to give up his child for adoption, he did so. He also allowed her to pressure him into sending his daughter to military school. Now, with his mother having Alzheimer’s, Nathan finally has to stand on his own two feet, and he’s not really sure that he can.

Background: Nathan was the first-born child into a wealthy family with a strict father and an appearances-keeping mother. Most people looked at the Forrester children and assumed that they were spoiled. But actually, the household had a very strict set of standards, and not living up to them was not tolerable. Nobody knew what went on behind closed doors. Everyone saw the family as a well-to-do family without a care in the world. And they saw this because of the efforts of Nathan’s mother, Vivian. No matter what happened, she always made sure that the family appeared to be happy and drama-free. Though, that was the furthest thing from the truth.
From a very small age, Nathan was required to maintain those standards. When he learned how to read at the age of three, his father shoved latin down the toddler’s throat. He was only allowed to play for twenty minutes per day, and if he was found fooling around any other time, there were severe consequences. The first time the young boy felt the belt was for playing when he was supposed to be reading Latin. He couldn’t help it. He had gotten a brand new sister when he was one, and a brother when he was two, and the toddler would much rather be playing with his siblings than reading latin. He never liked the language. But, he liked the belt even less. The three-year-old quickly learned discipline.
Nathan was a friendly boy, and when he was put in a top-notch pre-school, the boy made friends with all the kids, even the bullies. That popularity followed him right into elementary school, middle school, and high school. It was seventh grade when Nathan started playing sports. He seemed to have a golden touch, or so the coaches called it, because every sport he tried, he was good at. The boy led every team he ever played on right to the championships. He took home countless trophies. Basketball and Baseball were his favorite sports, but he also played football and soccer. Sports were his entire life. That is, until his eleventh grade year and met his best friend, Danny Maxwell.
Before he met Danny, Nathan never bothered to worry about any protests. Hell, he didn’t even protest it when his brother Ben was kicked out for being gay. But the day he met Danny, the boy was standing in the hallway of their school, giving a speech about not standing for something. To be honest, Danny wasn’t really paying attention to a whole lot of what he said. But one thing was certain. He was stealing his thunder. Nathan was supposed to be interviewed by Maggie, but her attention was on the grade niner. At first, he was annoyed, and wanted to demand that the boy stop. But after Danny was done, he approached him, and the two started talking. Next thing he knew, he had invited the boy to his house for tea. He hated tea, but his mother wouldn’t let them get out of it.
While he associated with the boy, Nathan never actually went to any of his protests. Nor did he reveal that he knew Danny as being Havoc to anyone. Even when he was threatened with suspension from school if he didn’t say. Nathan simply gave the principal a look like he was an idiot and asked him how he could be suspended for not giving information that he didn’t have? He was lying, of course, but this was his best friend. Nathan wasn’t going to just give him up.
When Nathan graduated from high school, he did so as Valedictorian with a scholarship to Cornell University. He was going to be taking classes to be an architect. Of course, he never anticipated his life changing so drastically in just a few short months. When he found out that he was going to be having a son, he decided not to go to Cornell after all. Instead, he chose to go to school right there in Toronto. That was where he met two women that wound up being the most important women in his life. Kari and Pam.
Kari was the one Nathan fell head over heels for. As long as knew her, though, Nathan never actually had the nerve to tell her how he felt. Instead, he spent his college days partying when he could have been with Kari, having one-night stands. It was in his junior year of college that he learned that once more, he had gotten someone pregnant. He also learned that Kari, unbeknownst to his affections for her, was seeing someone. It broke Nathan’s heart, though he never said a word about it. How could he? She never even knew how he felt. The only person who knew was Danny.
With Kari off with another guy, Nathan found himself in the company of Pam, who unlike him, had the courage to share her feelings. It was then that Nathan learned that she loved him. Wanting to numb the pain he was feeling, Nathan allowed himself to be with her. Weeks later, he learned that she was pregnant. She had given everything to Nathan, including her virginity. The least he could do was what his mother had wanted him to do the last two times he got someone pregnant. He proposed to her, despite not really loving her.
It was two weeks before Nathan was to be married that Anna came back into town. Nathan didn’t know her that well. She was four years younger than he was. If anything, she was more Danny’s friend than she was his. But he did know her through his best friend. When she came back, Danny was in New York, going to school. When he ran into him, he asked her if she’d heard about him. He had meant about Danny giving up his activism. But the girl seemed hurt by it. She said she didn’t want to talk about Danny. Nathan wondered if maybe the two had a fight or something. At any rate, he hadn’t meant to stir up bad feelings.
Wanting to make it up to her, he asked her to join him for a drink or something. She looked at him and asked her to go with her. She was shooting an episode of the tv show she had created and wanted footage of this factory that was polluting the air. He went with her, and when security noticed them, they wound up running from him. The two ended up in a tree, since it was the only place nearby they could hide. And something about being in a tree under the stars…combine that with his pre-wedding jitters, and –Nathan wound up being a man-whore once more. And some people have all the luck. She got pregnant. This time, Nate didn’t know what to do. He hadn’t meant to cheat on Pam. They hid it for a few months. Then, once she got far along to know the gender of the baby, a girl, he took Anna and sat down with both sets of parents to see if they could figure out what to do.
To their parents, it was obvious. Her parents didn’t want her to have a child, and his parents refused to let people find out that he had cheated on his now wife. They decided that the baby would be given up for adoption and that they (Vivian and Melvin) would take the baby, just to ensure no future drama with a teenaged girl were to find out who her parents were. She would never know the truth.
The parents were all in agreement. And, not wanting to disappoint anyone and certainly not wanting to hurt Pam, Nathan agreed and signed his parental rights away. Anna was a different story. She didn’t want to give up her child. She said giving them to live with monsters like them would be the same as having an abortion. And she didn’t believe in that. The eighteen year old was furious. She screamed at all of them for even thinking about trying to make her give the child up. And then, Anna made a mistake—she said she would rather be dead than give her up to people like them.
The girl’s parents put her in a mental hospital. Told them she was suicidal when she was pregnant. Nathan knew it wasn’t the case. The girl had a temper and had lost it, that was all. But he knew better than to speak up. His mother told him to go home, go to Pam and the boys. She said she would take care of everything. Nathan obeyed his mother. After all, he always obeyed his mother. It took three days, and his mother called to tell him it had been taken care of. Anna signed her rights away, and was released from the hospital at once. She said that she was going back to Los Angeles. Nathan went to her, asked her what had happened. The girl had tears in her eyes. She told her that she didn’t want to ever see him or his parents again. And she got on the train that was waiting for her and left.
True to her word, Nathan never did hear from her again. He did find out when little Gracie was born, because his parents brought her home. Pam told Nathan that she hoped that when they were that age, they would feel up to adopting a child. She loved the idea, the novelty of it. Nathan couldn’t tell her the truth, that the baby was really his. He had made a vow to keep silent about it. He needed to keep himself occupied. And when he found out that Pam was pregnant again, that definitely kept him occupied. This was his fifth child now, second with Pam. And when little Chastity was born, Nathan decided that he was done sleeping around. He now had five year old Lyle, three year old John, and two year old Neveah. Not to mention his one year old that he would never get to claim as his. He decided that he needed to simply focus on being a family.
That’s exactly what he did. He took Pam on a very-belated honeymoon to Africa. And honestly, he fell in love with her while they were gone. When they got back, Nathan decided that Neveah should have as much time with Danny’s daughter Tara as possible. He wanted his kids to enjoy his childhood like he never got to do. He put them in public school. Took them to a different country ever summer. Their Christmases were spent at home, with a fully-dressed tree. Honestly, Nathan couldn’t remember a single Christmas when he was growing up where they did the traditional tree, stockings, and presents. And he refused to withhold that experience from his children.
When Chastity was six years old, Pam informed the family that she was going to have a baby. She told the kids that they were going to have a sibling. And then, once in private, she told Nathan that she wanted to have her tubes tied. Of course, he supported the decision. If she didn’t want to have any more kids, than he wouldn’t ask her to.
The procedure was done shortly after Lana was born. She was a beautiful, healthy baby girl and both her and mommy were able to go home after three days. When they took her home, they introduced her to all of her siblings. They even helped each one of her hold her very carefully, starting with seven year old Chastity and making their way up to twelve year old Lyle. The newest addition to the family was cherished by all of them. And when Nathan learned that Kari had just had a baby, Nathan was excited. He wanted the two of them to be friends. After all, Lana and Tessa were the same age. He made arrangements with Kari for the family to go pay them a visit. They were going to make a trip out of it. A trip they never got to go on.
The car was having trouble. Nathan was going to have to wait for a mechanic. He told Pam to go ahead and go to the bank, get the money they were going to need for the trip. Had he known what would have happened, he would have gone instead. As fate would have it, though, that would be the very last time he ever saw his wife alive. There was a robbery in the bank. Having been taken hostage, Pam was shot and killed in order to prove to the police that they were serious.
The death of his wife changed Nathan. He no longer took his kids on trips. He no longer went all-out for the holidays. He found a way to continue on with his life, because his kids still needed a father. But had it not been for them, Nathan would have taken his life long ago. His entire life became about them. He lived for them, breathed for them, worked for them. That was his only purpose in life. For years, he didn’t even go out with Danny. The only time he spent time with his best friend was when he and Maggie brought Tara to play with Neveah.
That was how it happened for years. Nathan was on autopilot. When Chastity rebelled, his mother intervened and pressured him to send her to military school, which he did. When Maggie left Danny, it helped Nathan begin to come out of his rut. He began meeting Danny at the bar once a week. But he didn’t fully recover from it until the night he found a body in his shed. Rex, his St Bernard he had allowed the kids to get when Lana was four, had been barking and acting crazy. He went to find out what was going on, and found the girl. She was barely alive, with a bag tightly wrapping her head. He tore it off her and carried her into the house. John was the only one home. Nathan did CPR while John called 9-1-1. Once they got her to the hospital, Nathan realized what was going to happen. Cops would be investigating all of his kids. And the only one without an airtight alibi was his son, John. Nathan had no idea if his son could have done such a thing. But he wasn’t going to be taking any chances.
He packed his son’s things and put him on the next plane. He sent him to visit family, before the cops had a chance to tell him not to. He understood that he very well could have been harboring a murderer. But he refused to think like that. He refused to admit that he knew there was a possibility John could be the Sniper. Instead, he thought like a father. He wanted to protect his seventeen year old in every way that he could. And after the spring dance at Degrassi was massacred and Neveah was attacked, Nathan knew that he hadn’t done anything to put anyone in danger.
It was shortly after John left that Nathan received the call from Kari. She needed to get away from her husband. He wasn’t about to turn her away, so Nathan told her to come to his house and gave the address in case she didn’t remember it. He then went and explained to his daughters what was going on. Lana would be sharing a room with Tessa, after all. They had no more than settled in, when Lyle came home. Having Kari around, and now Lyle coming home, Nathan is starting to act like his old self. He’s even been making plans for the summer.
