Matt tried not to notice all the stares. He got them as soon as he entered the building. Not one person had the nerve to actually comment on the fact that he was in a wheelchair. Instead, they all stared. It was his first day of school in this thing. He knew the principal had been notified, as well as his teachers. But the student body had no idea. All Matt could do was look down, trying to ignore the whispers and stares. He wanted the day to be over with. He wanted to get home, get his fix. It had been nearly an entire day since his last one. And while he wasn't feeling like he absolutely had to have a fix, he did wish he could get another one. It took the edge off. It ALWAYS took the edge off.
As he rounded a corner, on his way to his homeroom, he heard chuckles. Matt looked up, his eyes narrowing when he saw what was going on. A couple of guys were taping pictures of Cassandra to her locker, with the word slut written across them. Matt watched them for a moment, feeling his anger rise. Before he could think, he had rammed his chair into one of the guys' legs, pinning him to the locker. He then backed up, watching the other boy fall. ''Whoops. Sorry. I'm new to the chair. But if you don't get out of here, that won't be the only accident we have.'' And, just to make sure he got the point, he went forward, the wheel dangerously close to his leg. ''Go on.'' He never raised his voice. He kept it low, with a dark tone to it. It definitely worked, though because the kid ran off. Matt grabbed the pictures, tearing them and dropping them in a nearby trash can. He didn't even realize someone was watching until his name was said.

It definitely was not an easy thing, being a teen mother. Especially when you were only fourteen years old. God, she hated Gavin for all of this. He hooked up with her, knocked her up. And then what? Nothing. As usual. What else were guys good for either? Only knocking girls up and then abandoning them when things get even slightly hard. Well, who needed him? Cassie did not need any guy. She was strong, determined, and responsible. She could take care of herself just fine. Cassandra did not need a guy to be strong for her. She had Larisa. She now had a mother to care about her. That was all she ever would need. Ever!
She had just stopped by the day care with her daughter. She had been running a little bit late that morning. She was so tired from staying up late with Kristen the night before that she had accidently overslept. After stopping by the day care, though, Cass left and headed down the hall towards her locker, while digging through her purse for her cell phone. But then something made her look up. She saw the boys, and she saw Matt. Defending her. She did not believe that she deserved defending. And what they were doing was nothing new anymore. “Matt…” she suddenly spoke without thinking. She should not have said anything. She should have turned back around and hid in the girls’ washroom. But instead, she began to walk towards the older teen.

And just like that, there she was. Matt looked at her and nodded. He didn't think she would ever understand why he did it. She didn't know about his mom. And for good reason. Ever since he learned that he was not a miracle baby, Matt has kept that part of his past a secret. So when he treated his females like shit, only his parents, Aidan, Jason, and Jessa knew why. Matt hated adult women because he was abandoned by one. And sure, he had abandonment issues. It wasn't despite of all that he did that for Cassie. It was because of it. The girl was fourteen. But she didn't just push the baby out and leave. That made her a hero. And anyone who did shit like this to a hero was going to answer to him.
He went past her to his locker. Why should he wait? So she could fawn all over him and thank him for saving her from Lex Luthor? Ok so he wasn't Superman. He hadn't been since he was 9. Still. He didn't need gratitude, real or fake. But as he opened his locker and reached for his books, they came crashing down, spilling all over the floor. Perfect.
