''Jack!'' his name rang out from opposite ends of the hallway. The first, from a grinning Ian, and the second, from an angry Matt. The latter piqued his interest. Matt was being rather daring. Well, that or stupid. Which was to be determined. Both teens reached him at the same time. ''Buzz off, Del Rossi. We got business. '' Ian growled at the other teen.
''You'll live. I just need him for a minute. Jack?'' Matt retorted, turning his attention to the Australian.
How could he turn him down? Jack was too curious for his own good. He raised a hand to Ian, letting him know to wait as he followed the dark-haired boy into an empty classroom. He watched for signs of a trap. But there were none. Instead, Matt leaned against the teacher's desk. His hand ran through his hair, visibly nervous. Jack raised an eyebrow. ''You gonna keep me in suspense, mate?''
''I can't do it. I thought I could. I can't. No matter how hard I try, I will never be able to protect them.'' Matt knew he would understand. Jack was the one who made it his job. Jack dragged him into a game of cat and mouse. And he knew he wasn't bluffing. Look what happened at the dance. And the party. Matt was powerless. There was just one thing left he could do. ''You're going to win. So I'm here to offer a deal.''
A DEAL. Jack was not expecting this. How could he resist? He should at least hear him out. Pulling up a chair from behind a desk, he sat down, gesturing for him to continue. ''I'm listening.''
''Them for me. You leave my family alone-and my friends-and you can make me number 56 or whatever the hell you're at. You can do whatever you want. I won't resist or fight back. Name a time and place. I will be there.''
Jack paused, musing over the idea. ''It won't cover your friends, mate. That's off the table.''
''Then at least add Marissa. I can't die knowing she could be next. You already killed her mom.''
Jack stood up. ''Fine. But if you back out, I go after her first.''
''I won't. Tell me when and where.'' Matt sounded desperate. He was. He wanted it over and done with.
''My place. The day after prom. Dinnertime. And you better be there. Or she'll be dead by midnight.'' And without waiting, Jack left the room, going to where Ian was waiting. He nodded to him as he went to his locker.
Following, Ian reached in his bag and pulled his wallet out. ''Wanna make a quick 50 bucks?''
Jack looked up as he grabbed his books he had for homework. ''Doing what?''
''This kid my aunt took in. She needs a babysitter. But I got a date. What do you say?''
Jack could think of a dozen things he hadn't tried yet. Strapping the kid down, cutting out the tongue, sewing the mouth shut, then going on to cut open her sides, burning her insides with coal then-Jack scoffed. ''I don't know how to babysit. What would I do with a kid?''
''Anything you want, man. She just wants a guy. That's all she cares about. I don't give a fuck what you do. I gotta go on this date. Come on, man.''
He was making it too tempting. First Matt, now this? This must be his lucky day. ''Keep your money, mate. I'll do it for free.''
''Great! Thanks! I'm texting you the address of her school now. Her name's Rebekah!'' and just like that, he was gone. Within seconds, he got the text. Jack sighed and headed for the school. He was sure he stood out amongst the mothers. There were so many kids around. How was he supposed to know who she was? Finally, he did what made the most sense- he started calling out her name.

------------------------------------- A week. A week in a new city, new town. In a new home. She was with people of both the same and the opposite sex. Now, she would not step foot near any of the woman in the house. She clung more to the guys. Becka could trust the guys. But women? Her mother had spent so long abusing her that Becka had grown to fear women of all ages. This week, the kids at the house kept taking turns baby-sitting the child. She was the youngest in the house. She was not even use to having such a big family. It had just been her and her parents. She was an only child. But now, it would almost seem as though she had older brothers and sisters. This was something that she just was not use to. Even though she had been here for a week now, this was actually her first day at a new school. She was quiet today and tried to avoid being near any of her fellow girl students. She felt scared, felt nervous. She really wished that JJ could be with her right about now. She hardly spoke at school. And if one of the women staff tried to speak with her, she would start freaking out. Becka had eaten lunch in a bathroom stall, wanting away from everyone. Finally, though, the school day had ended and she grabbed her backpack, heading outside of the school building. She looked around for a moment, before hearing her name being called. She turned around. She walked over and saw the man saying her name. “I'm Rebekah. She was perfect. Those eyes, her hair. He was willing to bet that she would do anything she wanted. First, he had to get her ahead of him. That was always easy with the kids. So trusting, so innocent. Kids were a great stress relief. But today, it wasn't about him. The five kids he murdered, they were. But this? It was business. He needed another letter sent. And for that reason, he was here. After all, Ian DID say that he could do anything he wanted with her. A foolish statement, but of course, Ian didn't know that. Jack had to keep from grinning. After all, even if Ian didn't know it, he had consented to this girl's murder.
''I'm Austin. I'm a friend of Ian and JJ. Ian's supposed to be here, but he got held up at school. Asked me to walk you home and stay with you until JJ gets home.'' Or something like that. ''Though, I've never been to the house before. Mind leading the way and showing me how to get there?'' He had it mapped out in his head. He would strike once they got in the alley behind the nearby strip mall.

------------------------------------- Why shouldn't Becka trust the man? She easily trusted all men, no problem. It was just women that she could not trust. And who could blame her? After all of the things that her mother had done to her. And her father just let her. But he was more of a parent to her than her mother had ever and would ever be. And to be completely honest, Becka truly missed her father. When the social worker had taken her, the child had not understood why she could not be with her daddy. He never hurt her. Not once. And now the child was stuck in a home, where she knew nobody. But it was not so bad at least. She had JJ. She liked JJ. She wanted to stay with him. She even wanted to go to school with him. Of course, that was not possible. Becka had her own school she needed to attend. She gave an innocent smile and nodded. “Okay!” she spoke excitedly. She took the older boys hand and pointed. “It's this way. Oh! I can show you the teddy my daddy gave to me when he was born! My daddy loved me. Did your daddy love you too?” She started to pull him into the direction, just talking and talking. ------------------------------------- tags;; Jack clothes;; 218 music;; your muse notes;; any other thoughts? lyrics;; I Can't Do It Alone by 3OH!3 credits;; made by megaru. don't steal. it's so not cool. she will sick ninjas on your butt if you steal.

He tensed when she took his hand. He wasn't used to human touch, in the least. He didn't know if she would notice it or not, but she didn't seem to. He allowed her to lead him, but he did have a problem. With her holding his hand, he couldn't just pick up something to knock her out with. As they made their way to the alley, though, he realized that he would be fine. After all, who would bother to search for fingerprints on a child's head?
With one quick movement, he grabbed her head, slammed it into the brick wall, and watched her as her body went limp. He then picked up the child. He would take her to his basement, just as he had been lately. Ever since Rumor, he hadn't been able to take anyone to the shed. He lost that to the police. So, his basement had provided the alternative. As it turned out, the walls were super thick and even the shrillest of screams wouldn't be heard by the next door neighbors. He had been doing this for a few weeks now, taking people to the basement. Except for Mrs. DiMarco. She had been special. He laid her on the floor before checking the pulses of his other bodies. Only the girl, Stephanie was still alive. The boys were long gone.

The past ten months had changed eleven year old Stephanie Mellark. It was June 3rd, 2031, to be exact. It was the day that her older sister Avalon turned eighteen and left the group home they were in. Steph had been real clingy to her sister ever since they were placed in the home, three years ago. It was the first time Stephanie had seen her sister since they were taken from their home, when she was six. Stephanie knew that this whole thing was her fault. She was the one that drew the picture. Her father had warned her that it was their little secret. He told her that her mother would be mad at her if she told. The movies he watched, he did so in front of both girls. But Steph was the one that her father paid special attention to. She was the one that was taken on his business trips so they could spend time together. She was the one he would force on his lap so he could play with her. And when she complained or protested, she was the one he beat.
Stephanie had admitted her reasons for drawing the picture once, to the caseworker who took the girls away from their parents. Avalon had already been placed in a temporary home. It was three in the morning, and they were still looking for a home for Stephanie. The six year old held her bear and said tearfully that all she had wanted was for him to stop. She thought that if she drew the picture, of the little girl making her daddy happy, then her teacher would tell her mom and he would have to stop. She never wanted to go away. She had been told that it wasn't her fault, but she never believed it.
The next two years were spent house-hopping. There were a few families that wanted to adopt her, but each and every time the word was mentioned, Stephanie would act up. She would do whatever it took to get sent away. Because, she never wanted to be adopted without her sister. She had a slingshot, and even used it to break all the windows of the car that belonged to the people who wanted to adopt her. That was the last time anyone took her in their home ever again. That was when she was eight.
Right after that, she was placed in the group home. It wasn't the best, but Avalon was there as well. As long as they could stay together, she would be happy. And as the next three years went by, she came to consider the rest of the kids to be family as well. But it didn't mean that they could ever replace her sister. And when she left, their presence didn't help. At all. And since her sister left, Stephanie's personality changed for the worse. She was bitter towards her older sister for leaving her like that. There was no way she could understand how she would do that, when Steph had tried her hardest to be with her sister when they were separated.
She began running away. Not to be with her sister, but to get the hell out of Toronto. She wanted out of the city, to start new. Sure, she was only eleven, but she didn't think that mattered. She could pretend to be a couple of years older, maybe coax her way into a home. If her sister didn't want her, then she didn't want her sister. The only problem was, she kept getting caught and dragged back. Not this time, though. This time, her plan was flawless.
She had stuffed her backpack with her clothes, her teddy bear, and a charm bracelet her mother had given her the last time she saw her, on the day they removed her parental rights. She walked outside with the other kids, and got on the bus. As soon as she waited for it to come to a stop, she climbed out of the emergency exit. She got out of the street as quickly as she could. And that was when she met him.
He said his name was Johnny. He said that he lost his younger sister, Brooke. He said that he needed help looking for her. He told her that he would give anything to have some help looking for her. Now, Stephanie wasn't naive when it came to strangers. At least, she didn't think she was. She wanted to make sure that he wasn't taking advantage of her. So, she told him that if she helped him, he would have to do something for her. She wanted him to take her to the train station. With a friendly smirk, he told her that she had a deal.
What happened next was all a blur. The eleven year old was forced in the house. He made her write a note to someone. He burned her ear. And over the past six days, starved her, cut into her, and burned her. She was lying there with a bloodied, burnt shoulder, gashes in her stomach from where she had been cut into and her appendix pulled. Her arms were pulled under the table she was lying on and her wrists were bound together. She was still alive. She felt her heart barely beating, and breathing was hard, but she was alive. It was more than she could say for the boys he brought in over the past six days.
She heard the door open. Her eyes fluttered open, before realizing it was him again. Immediately, she shut her eyes. She didn't want to get any more attention than she already had. She didn't know how, but she knew she was going to stay alive. She wasn't going to die. She felt his fingers against her neck, but that was all he did. And when he left, she opened her eyes. There was another girl. Most likely alive, since she wasn't cut or burned or broken. She watched her, waiting for her eyes to open. If she could, she would help her. The boys she had been with hadn't wanted help. Hopefully, this girl will be different. She didn't want to see any more kids die.

It had all happened so fast. There was no time for the child to even react. One moment, the child was happy, carefree. She was leading this nice man to her house. She was excited like any child should be. She had no idea that everything was about to change. She had no idea what the day was about to bring her. She had no idea that by the end of the night, she would be wishing for death to greet her.
In one quick motion, Becka's head was grabbed from behind. And her head had then been slammed into a brick wall. She had no time to react, to scream. Everything went completely black and she seemed to be lost in her own mind. Where she was not in pain or scared. Were she seemed to be happy. She was lost in the happy place inside of her own mind. But when she did finally come to, she was lost and confused and scared. She quickly sat up, looking around in a panic. She backed up against the wall, hugging her legs tightly as she started crying. Right now, all she wanted was JJ.

Stephanie stared up at the ceiling. Sometimes, if she focused real hard, she could imagine that she was in a different place. That she wasn't in danger at all. She was in a cabin in the woods. Or maybe in a motel room about to go somewhere fun. Maybe when she woke up, Avalon would be there. Her sissy. And she'd be dressed all in white. She would hold Stephie and tell her that it was all just a bad dream. And then she would give her some milk and cookies to cheer her up. Stephanie thought of that, and everything seemed ok for a little while. And then he would come in, or she would hear a noise and reality would sink back in.
She looked at the other girl when she stirred. Poor kid was scared, and she had good reason to be. Biting her lip, she watched as she hugged herself. Stephanie didn't know if her warnings would do any good. “Shh. Don't scream. He'll hear you and come in. If you do what I tell you, you have a chance at staying alive. I can get you out of here but I can't if you're dead. Ok?'' She hadn't given her name. Did names matter here? If she got out with Stephie, then she would give her name and get hers. But right now, names didn't save lives. After Henry, Stephanie decided that she didn't want to know names of any kids who died. It felt too bad.
