History (in 3-4 sentences):
A decade wasn't a long time to judge a child's life, but it felt like more than an eternity for Chance. His first ten years of life were a completely twisted and blurred section. Rich and highly acclaimed, Chance's parents were well-known members in the community and celebrated amongst their group of friends. Although, like most families, they harboured secrets. Stern for all appearances, one little mistake resulted in punishment for the young boy. The child was brilliant. Early on, they knew it, but his brilliance didn't give him any slack. If anything, it made it all start early. There were physical punishments, of course, but not only physical but psychological. From beatings to mind games, they restricted access to food and any other thing he may want. Sometimes including light. They'd lock him up for hours at a time, given what he'd done wrong to begin with.
It wasn't all, however. The family would have parties, parties with other rich and celebrated people. But, when the lights dimmed and few remained, Chance's world took a dark turned. His memory is limited of that time in his life, given that his parents used drugs to keep him dazed, sleepy and yet still awake enough to move and know that something was happening. It would've probably continued forever. In private, Chance lived in terror, but in public, he plastered on a smile and looked like the perfect child of a beautiful couple. It would've probably continued on forever, but of all things, it was a lost jogger that saved him. A clumsy child, Chance had gone with his mother to a supermarket and accidentally trying to carry more than he should've tried, he wound up tripping into a display shelf and knocked everything over. Plenty of kids have done it before, and his mother acted compassionate until they arrived home. And then came the switch and the confinement. This time, in the trunk of one of the cars. Normally, he was quiet, but for once, he screamed and kicked and roused attention from someone who called the cops.
The family went up in scandal. But, money and power got them out of it. They gave up the child and left town. Still free, Chance didn't hear from them again until he was 16, and then again when he was 18. He ignored each and every attempted contact. But, his last one was six months prior.
At ten, however, he was put into the foster system. He went to two homes before that, but it never worked out. Naturally, he was depressed, confused and not a lot of parents knew how to deal with him. And in one instance, a father had grown angry with him and when he lifted his hand, the boy had screamed, screamed and lost it. He was damaged and went right back. It wasn't until he met Ben and Marco that he had a real home. Just weeks under their roof and his personality had changed around completely. He was turning into the boy that he was meant to be; happy, healthy and reaching his potential. He excelled in school, graduating high school when he was 15 and going off to college by the time he was 16. He had no idea what he wanted to be and so he went after it all. He wanted to help people, that was his only criteria.
By 23, he had multiple doctorates. A microbiologist by choice, Chance was also taught in law and psychology. After spending a year in Africa researching disease, he decided to go home again. He's been so successful in his young life, but all of a sudden, he doesn't really know what he wants.
