May 13th, 2018. Five years ago. That date ran through her mind a thousand times a day. For anybody else, it was an especially humid day. For Elena Yesenia Del Rossi, it was the day that her life was ruined.
She was just a kid. She had turned eighteen three days before. She was graduating that summer and had been accepted to Banting. Her dreams earlier that year was to study Political Science. She was going to change the world, starting with Canada. She was going to take the country by storm. She had the drive and the motivation. That was before she met Micah.
He was charming, smart, and cute. As a late bloomer, Elena had not had any experience with boys. She had been the girl next door to everybody. So when she was given a chance at love, she grabbed it blindly. Everybody told her it was a bad idea. A guy six years older couldn't be very good for her. Her entire family tried to intervene. Her older brother Andre had done a background check and had not liked the results. It wasn't anything big, but it was enough for the man to want Micah away from his little sister.
But she was in love. It was a hard thing to watch the baby of the family give up her dreams for a guy that no one wanted her to be with. They were just looking out for her. But Elena had not thought of it that way. She was blinded to the truth of the matter. She thought he loved her; she thought he wanted to marry her.
A wedding was out of the question. When she asked her father to help out, he screamed at her and ordered her to never see him again. Her older brothers were pleading with her to not throw her life away for him. She had done so much more than throw away her life, though. She gave up her freedom for him.
They had to make it somehow. Her parents were not going to pay for a wedding that they did not approve of. So when he mentioned the bank in Toronto, she was all for robbing it. They needed the money, after all. He had told her to trust him, that he knew what he was doing. That everything would be fine and go perfectly smoothly. But it didn't.
They had the cash in bags when the police showed up. "Time to go" he had said. They had gotten in through a back door. As Elena followed him, though, she was suddenly jerked back. Her pants had gotten caught on a nail that was sticking out of a desk. She tugged at it, but couldn't get loose. "Micah!" She had called after him, but he was long gone.
"We know you had an accomplice. We found two sets of shoe prints. If you tell me who you were working with, I'll set you free with just one year of probation. You could go home to your family" Ben offered, leaning over. "But if you don't give him up, I'll make sure you get the maximum. Thirty years is a long time to rot in prison, Elena"
Elena shook her head. "No" She loved him. And she knew as soon as the coast was clear, he would come visit her. He would be grateful, and if she ever got out, the two would live together happily ever after.
"Miss Del Rossi?" Elena was snapped out of her daydream, and she sat up.
"Sorry" she said, looking at her parole counsel. "What was the question?"
"How can we be sure that you won't run off and rob another bank if we release you for parole?"
The question made Elena bite her lip. "I committed this offense out of love. It was irrational and it was for a man I thought loved me."
"And now?"
Elena shrugged "I haven't seen this man in almost five years. I know he doesn't love me. You don't have to worry about another act of love out of me."
The word approved rang out and Elena was escorted to pick up her belongings. She was assigned a parole officer, who would be contacting her within twenty four hours. She was not going to have to live in a confined home, but she was not allowed to live on her own, either. The half italian was placed under the care of her older brother, Andre.
May 13th. That day forever would stay in her head. As she waited for her brother, her mind kept going back to it. "I love him, Andre. And he loves me. He needs me" her voice seemed to taunt her and laugh now. Love. What a joke.
