* CALM BEFORE THE STORM SET IT OFF a reception less than warm set it off and the sun burned out ! •• • • • • • • • • • •
It was breaking Marissa's heart saying what she had said in order to get JJ to move on. She cared for him. Really. But he deserved so much more than her. She deserved to get hurt time after time. She deserved to feel main or be hit or to feel the pain that she felt. JJ just did not understand this. But even if Matt was not and never was in the picture, she still would not be eating. Because it just was not Matt, but her very own father as well. All she wanted was for both of them to love her. She felt more alone than ever. Her twin was in a coma, her baby sister dead to suicide, her mother murdered and her father never there for his family. No one would ever and could never understand that feeling.
Marissa had just taken the keys from the ground and ran out of the door. She picked up the helmet, but never did put it on. Who needed to wear one anyway? She shook her head and threw it to the ground, hopping on. She jammed the keys into the ignition and started it up. And with that, headed down the dark street, late in the night. It was not really that hard for her to get by when the street had been completely deserted. She kept swerving but kept on driving, tears blurring her vision slightly. And trying to ignore the extreme headache that she was beginning to get. She really did not feel well, but she needed to get home. Her plan, she would drive to JJ's home to leave his cycle and then just walk on home from there.
Finally, Marissa had made it back into town without much troubles. But then she began to feel weaker and let her tears fall more freely, clouding her vision worse. She began swerving and swerved into the next lane as a car began coming towards her. She was losing complete control and felt like she might very well pass at. And before preventing it, Marissa flew onto the sidewalk and slammed into a wall, falling off of the bike. Although, she had lost consciousness before she had even hit the ground. Her head hit the concrete. Blood began to slowly spill onto the sidewalk. Not much. Just a little bit. She got a long gash on her left arm from her wrist all the way up to her elbow. And a cut on her left cheek.

Pregnant? Oh, no. She couldn't be pregnant. America and her just couldn't be parents. They didn't even get along most of the time. They cheated on each other all the time. Oh, God. What if he wasn't the father? What if it was one of the other eight or nine guys she'd been with? America would be so hurt. But if she never told him? He would have nothing to be upset over. So, she'd make an appointment to get an abortion. Yeah, that was the solution. It wouldn't be the first time. Michelle knew the staff at the clinic by heart, she had been there so many times. Still, she'd need someone to go with her. Someone who wouldn't go running to Ric. Definitely not Elliot. Her brother would tell out of boredom, just to be an ass. Maybe one of her other brothers or Kat. As she turned at the light, she decided to work it out later. America and the rest of the detectives on the Sniper case were working late tonight. She decided since it was just her eating dinner, she wasn't going to cook. It was so late. But as she headed in the direction, she suddenly saw a motorcycle in the wrong lane. Screaming, she both swerved and slammed on her brake. She could hear the car hit something, and her headlight busted as she went head-on into a street light, causing the air bag to come out.
Coughing, she pushed on the bag as she opened the car door, managing to climb out. She could feel a small amount of blood trickling down her forehead. Dizzy and disoriented, she took a second to compose herself before looking around. When she caught sight of the cycle and the girl, she ran over. ''No, no, no. Don't be dead. Come on, don't be dead. Wake up, or move, or something!'' but the girl just lay there. God, if only she paid attention in first aid in high school. She had no idea what to do. She knew what she was not going to do. She was not going to call her husband. He'd have to arrest her! She couldn't go to jail! She was too pretty to go to jail. Hello, former prom queen and head cheerleader! She had to just figure this one out on her own. She was a fugitive now.
Then again, that was only if they knew it was her. Going back to the car, she pulled out everything that belonged to her, including the steering wheel cover and registration information. She then called 9-1-1 and claimed to be a witness to a hit and run. The ambulance came, and when the paramedics found a pulse, it was definitely a shock. She was asked to go along, and hesitating, Michelle climbed in and rode to the hospital. She wound up in the waiting room, but it was not long before she couldn't believe her eyes.
Craig Manning! Michelle slowly stood, watching as he and a body guard came in, demanding to see her. Silently, she followed to the room the girl was in, but before she could go in, she was stopped by the body guard. ''Not so close, Miss''
Of course Craig came. Of course. And he was furious that it had been a hit and run. Oh, he would find out who did this and destroy them. They were going to be sorry. After all, he was Craig Manning! He got to the hospital and was led right to Marissa's room. He hoped she'd remember something.

Maybe if she had not been so upset. Maybe if she had not been starving herself and felt extremely weak. Maybe Marissa would have never gotten into that accident. This was all her fault. No one but herself. Her subconscious took over. Went back to things that she had been through before that night. It was like a bad dream. It was like watching a movie or watching this, thinking that it was someone else entirely. Her rape, pregnancy, miscarriage. Her breakup with JJ, the almost suicide. All she had been through with Matt. Every single bad thing that had ever happened to her. And then she saw something else. Maybe it was her subconscious trying to tell herself something. Trying to warn her maybe. But Marissa was watching this girl, some girl that looked exactly like herself. But it did not seem like the same girl. But she saw this girl, this extremely thin and sick looking girl. She almost looked like a child, much younger than fifteen. And she was a lot thinner than she was now. Maybe 70 lbs. And this girl was lying in a morgue somewhere. She was dead. And just fifteen years old. She knew that would be were she was going if she did not get off of this dangerous path that she was on.
And that scared her. She began screaming, in this dream. Not knowing that she was really screaming in reality as well. But she was still unconscious. She must have been crying and screaming while still asleep for at least five minutes. Maybe a little longer. And then she was startled awake. And the screaming suddenly stopped. Her eyes seemed so blurry. She seemed so tired. Maybe that was because she had been asleep for 12 hours. Or maybe it was from the pain meds given to her through an IV. Where was she? She could not make that out. And what was that annoying beeping? It took her a few minutes to realize that she was not even alone. Her dad and that bodyguard. But who was these other people. She was scared and extremely confused. What had happened last night? But she remained quiet.

''No press. Got that? Make everyone sign a form. I will shut this hospital down if this gets to the press. I mean it... Thanks, Sarah. You're a doll'' Turning off his bluetooth, Craig didn't acknowlege anyone but his daughter at first. ''I got you something.'' handing her a box, he pointed to it. ''According to the kid who sold it to me, it will answer any question you ask. Plus, it has gps and can get a bunch of songs on it. I already put one on there. It's my new single. Called Marissa. You even get to keep your old cell number. Oh, and I decided you were old enough for your very own credit card. It has no limit, so now you and Natasha can both buy out the mall.'' Of course, he wasn't posing questions. Craig was scared out of his mind, off his meds, and was definitely in manic mode. Sure, he was in a sweet, giving dad mood now. But any minute now, he could flip out and be sobbing or fighting.
Richard watched with a disapproving eye. If that was his daughter, he would be hugging her and telling her she would be ok before finding out where she got the motorcycle and going scary dad on the one who gave up the keys. Not brushing it off with expensive cell phones and unlimited credit cards. Not like he could afford those, anyway. The man had 3 kids at home, was minutes from losing the house and getting the car repossesed, and was working eighteen hours a day between his two jobs to make ends meet. He couldn't afford luxaries like those. If he had the money Craig did, he'd quit and just focus on being a dad. He was sure he sucked at it now, simply for the lack of time.
''Mr. Manning, I hate to speak out of line, but shouldn't someone be bringing her breakfast?''
''I can get her something''
And just like that, Craig noticed the dark-haired beauty being blocked by Richard. Raising his eyebrows, he flashed a grin. ''Well, hello. You know, Richard, hospital food is never any good.''
Richard stared at the floor to hide his annoyance. Didn't he ever turn it off? ''Of course it's not.''
''It is. I'll go with her to get some quality food.''
As he watched the two leave, Richard sighed and looked at the girl in the hospital bed. ''well, my morning is a blast. How's yours going?'' Walking up to the bed, he pulled a chair beside it. ''you feeling ok?''

A new cell phone? An unlimited credit card? Okay. Pretty awesome. But it just made Marissa feel even more alone. It made her realize just how much her father really had changed. Back at the beginning of the year, when Marissa had crashed her father's motorcycle, at least then she knew that he had cared. He yelled at her, grounded her even. She did not like it and sure she was upset over it, but at least her father cared enough to punish her. He was probably just scared. That was only at the beginning of the year. Only about 5 or 6 months ago. But it seemed like a century ago. A lifetime ago. Marissa knew the truth. Her father just did not love her anymore. Buying expensive things... did he think that would make up for everything? He did not even pay attention. To the fact that her heart is breaking. Never noticed how much she was weighing these days or the cuts upon her skin. He just did not notice anymore. Did not care. Marissa knew that the relationship that she was was just wrong. She knew deep down that Matt was angry with her and possibly hated her. But Marissa loved him. So much. She would die for him. How could she ever leave him knowing that he could never walk again? And for JJ, his arch enemy? JJ had hurt her too. Broke her heart, no shattered it. She almost killed herself for him. He had even slapped her. And how can she trust him, after the incident in the bathroom.
So JJ said that he would understand if the girl wanted to seek revenge on him. But never once, never, did he actually say the words 'I'm Sorry'. That was something that Marissa just desperately needed to hear. But how could she expect anyone to understand how she was feeling? No one could. And all she wished was that when she tried to kill herself after her and JJ broke up, she had wished that she did actually die. Maybe she needed help, deep down she did know this. But more importantly, the girl just needed her father.
Of course. All her dad could do was stare at that damn woman in the room. That's all he could ever do. He never cared about his own children. He never would. Maybe she should just leave home. There has to be someone that will care about her. She did not want any food. She watched as her father left the room with another one of his bitches and quickly sat up, fighting tears from forming in her eyes. She just looked to Richard as he pulled up a chair next to her bed. Swallowing, Marissa threw her legs over the edge of her bed. “And why would you care? You're my father's damn body guard. He should be all you care about. Not me.” And she went to stand up, planning on getting the hell out of there. Though she did not plan on feeling so weak. So when she went to stand up, she immediately fell, her legs weak and shaking.

Richard watched her closely. Marissa was a sweet girl. He knew that much from her dealings with her friends whenever he was around. "I'm a little bit more than that," he said gently. He considered himself to be more than just some bodyguard. Sure, yeah, when he first took this job, it was just to pay the bills. And he figured the description would be pretty predictable. Protect the rock star from stalkers, things like that. He never knew about the kids before he took this job. And ever since Desi was a little girl, Richard had grown protective of kids. Especially a kid who didn't seem to have a regular parent like she deserved. He noticed the tears in the girl's eyes when Craig left. Damn it, he hated when the man did this. If he didn't think he'd get fired, he'd say a few things to him.
As she stood up, he instinctively stood with her. She wasn't going to be able to walk. He could tell that from the start. And as soon as she started to fall, he caught her. "Whoa, careful there." He looked down at her, sighing as he straightened up, cradling her. "I may work for your dad, but you didn't see me follow him, did you? I do have priorities. And injured beauties are of highest priority." Yes, she was beautiful. He didn't think that she heard that enough. He made it a point to tell his daughter several times a week that she looked beautiful. Even if he hadn't really seen what she was wearing. But the point was, a teenaged girl's self-esteem was uncertain, and it was up to the parent to help build it. And if Craig wouldn't do it, then hell, he would.
"Cops are on their way. You were involved in a hit and run. They're gonna want to know if you remember anything about the driver, or the car," he told her gently as he sat on the bed with her in his arms. "But I'm here. So if you don't feel up to it now, I can persuade them to leave." As a body guard and a bouncer, he definitely had his ways of getting people to back off and leave. He had even gotten men bigger than him away. "You don't have to do anything that you don't want to. All you need to do is get better. And eat. A girl your age shouldn't be this light. When was your last meal, Marissa?" his tone wasn't accusatory. It was gentle. He wanted to help her, even if he didn't know how to. After all, if his little girl wasn't eating, he would be terrified. He had to help her. He had to.

When was her least meal? Nobody ever asked her that. Nobody ever cared to ask. But why did Richard? When even her own family did not care. She immediately shook her head, trying to keep her tears from falling. "No, I don't want to eat. And it doesn't matter when my last meal was." And she tried to push away. "Just leave me alone." Marissa whimpered out. She wanted to get out of there. To get far away. "Put me down. And don't go around acting as though you care about me. I don't need anyone, but myself." "Put me down!" she spoke, louder, pushing against his chest. Tears began to spill from her eyes and it was not long before she was sobbing. "Just get out of here. Leave me alone." She cried out, wincing in pain from the accident.

Richard wasn't new to power struggles. His strength was tested plenty of times at the club. But by drunk adults, not sick teenagers. And it wasn't like he didn't understand how scary the hospital experience was. Ever since the twins were born, there were several times when he practically lived in the hospital. Quinn's first year was spent getting surgery after surgery done, after he was born with his heart on the right side instead of the left. Doctors didn't think he would live past the age of three. But without the operations, he would die in a matter of weeks. Every time they prepped him for another high-risk surgery, Richard would wait, terrified that he would die on the table. And if that wasn't enough, Preston had just spent the last six months in the hospital, where they diagnosed him with Crohn's disease. So yeah, Rich knew how scarey it was. But he was helping her. And she was yelling at him, pushing on him. And he wasn't going to let that happen.
Holding on to her, he forced her to lay down as he put his weight on the bed, making it so she couldn't move. He wasn't actually on her, since he didn't want to hurt her. But, she wasn't going anywhere, either. ''Stop it, right now. You are acting like a five year old. If you were my daughter, you'd be making a trip over my knee. I get that being Craig Manning's kid means you get to be a spoiled little brat, but you need to get yourself together. I am trying to help. It's not part of my job, it's part of being a dad. Look at you! Your arms and legs--you're doing a wonderful job taking care of yourself. Now, you are going to lay your ass back down, or I will handcuff you to the bed. And you are GOING to eat, or I'll get the nurse to feed you through an IV.''

Tears began to fill the young girls eyes as she whimpered, struggling When he forced her to lay down. Spoiled? Marissa did not thinking she was spoiled. More like invisible. All she wanted was her fathers attention. Was that too much to ask for? She was So sure that it was her own fault that her dad never paid any attention to his own daughter. Not pretty enough. Not smart enough. Not thin enough. She was nothing, a nobody. She didn't deserve such luxuries like food. She deserved to be punished for her sins. "No." She cried out. "Won't. No food. Can't eat. Won't eat. Gotta stay perfect. Daddy's little girl. His baby girl."
She stopped struggling after saying that last thing. "Daddy doesn't love me anymore." She whimpered. "Gotta make him love me. Gotta make my boyfriend love me. Don't want anyone to hate me." She looked up at Richard, with tear-filled eyes. "No spoiled. Just invisible. Bad...bad daughter, bad girlfriend. Gotta be punished."

He wondered if he would be fired for kicking Craig's ass. He was killing his own kid! Did he even notice? He bet he could shove his guitar up his ass and make him realize. Richard focused on breathing for a minute, not wanting to take his anger out on her. He looked at her and sighed. ''Look, I get wanting to keep up an image. You probably have more pressure than other kids your age. And that's not your fault. But be honest with me, kid. How do you feel? Do you feel energized, happy? Because if you are doing the right thing for your body, that's how you would feel. If you don't believe me, ask the doctor.'' There was no way. She wasn't healthy. She was pale and far too thin. There was no way she could feel good. And there had to be a way to make her realize that what she was doing was dangerous.
''I'm getting up. But don't try anything. I'm stronger than you,'' he warned. Straightening up, he hit the call button. He had warned her what would happen if she wouldn't eat. And he wasn't going to waste time. Looking at the remote, he pushed it several more times. After a few minutes, an annoyed nurse walked in. Before she could say anything, he pointed to Marissa. ''I don't know who admitted this girl and changed her clothes, but they didn't observe her obvious malnutrition. And as someone who works directly for Craig Manning, I can easily convince him that you need to be out of a job. Don't think he can do it? Craig has connections. All he has to do is mention a multi-million dollar lawsuit, and you'll have to go to the Vnited States to find work. So I strongly reccommend that you get the doctor in here so he can order an IV and get this girl the nutrients she needs. You have ten minutes'' He spoke sternly and without a word, she nodded and walked back out. Well, at least he was getting her help.

No. Marissa did not want to believe him. She would not believe him. She was doing the right thing there for herself. That was something that she had convinced herself of. She did not feel good. Marissa knew why. She was depressed and moody. She always felt So weak and constantly dizzy. But she did not care. Not anymore. She had trained herself not to care anymore. No one else cared about her, So why should she care about her own self? "I--" she didn't want to answer what he asked of her. She did not want to admit how sick she truly felt. Tears glistenened in her eyes.
When Richard gotten up, that was when Marissa sat up very slowly and looked to him. "No...." she whimpered, when he kept hitting that call button. She did not want to eat, damnit. Why did people keep trying to force food down her throat? It's not like her own father was worried. So why should anyone else? Marissa watched as an annoyed nurse walked in. She let out a whimper and layed down, hiding under her covers like a scared little child. She peeked out after the nurse was gone. She didn't want An IV in her arm. She was terrified of needles. But she was not going to eat on her own either. "No. Make them stay out. No needle. No food. Wanna go." She spoke in a childlike voice. She did not even feel like herself anymore.

Richard wasn't going to argue. He was treating her like he treated his kids. He didn't believe in arguing. That would mean being as immature as them and while they were kids and he expected them to be, he was the parent. And unlike the rock star he worked for, he knew how to be the parent. So, rather than try to argue his point, he waited in silence. It wasn't a long wait. Ten minutes went by before Dr. Chase knocked and walked in. With a smirk, he straightened up. ''I see threats go far here. So, doc, ready to do your job?''
Keaton cleared his throat. ''I need Mr. Manning to sign a form before I can administer anything.''
Richard frowned. He didn't trust Craig. What if he didn't think she needed it? ''Let me see the form.''
''It has to be Mr. MANNING'S signature.'' he emphasized.
''It will be. Just leave it and come back. He's not here yet, anyway.'' He watched as he left and picked up the form from the bed. He looked at her for a moment. He wondered what the circumstances would be if he did this. But as he looked at her, he thought of his own daughter. And how he would do anything to help Desi if she were in the bed. He cleared his throat, pulling a pen from his inside jacket pocket. ''I don't expect you to like me right now. But someday, you'll thank me. The point is, you'll still be alive then'' He carefully forged the name and held it for her to see. ''What do you think? It look like your dad's signature? Don't try this at home.''

Alive. He cannot possibly know if she will be alive long enough. Especially since he can't be there to watch her 24/7 and her dad obviously does not care if his daughter is killing herself trying to keep up her image. “You know, when MY daddy finds out you forged his signiture, he will not be happy. Not at all.” She folded her arms across her chest. “You know, don't think I won't tell them that you signed it. You can't force me to do nothing. Not when I don't want to.” She narrowed her eyes at the bodyguard. No way was she going to be forced into this. She did not want to eat. Not to mention that she couldn't. It hurt to eat now. Maybe its because her stomach had shrunk. Who knew.
She reached out for the paper. No, he could not do this. He was not her father. He could not treat her as though she was his own daughter. No way. No how. “Forget it. Your scheme is not going to work. Okay? You cannot keep my mouth shut. And I will make sure that they know that you signed it.”

Richard watched her. Did she really think that she was being threatening? He knew better. She was a child. And like any child would do, she was pushing him, out of fear. Rich knew a little something about fear. He remembered going home, seeing his young daughter being drowned by her own mother. He remembered the fear, the panic like it was yesterday. And he kept it to himself. He kept a lot of things to himself. Because a dad was supposed to be fearless.
He held the paper out of her reach and sighed. ''Look, it's understandable. You and your best friend were beaten and raped together. You were put in the hospital by the creep who did that to you. Your parents split up. You are going through an AIDS scare. Your ex boyfriend beat you up. And you had to watch your mom die. Then there was the incident with your boyfriend and his dad's ex and a gun. You have been through a lot. But those things didn't kill you. Instead, you're doing it to yourself. Being the Sniper's little helper. Is that what you want? To help the person who murdered your mom?''

Boyfriend. Boyfriend. Was that what Matt even was anymore? All Marissa wanted to do was make him happy. But she could not help but believe that he would have been better off if he had never met her. All her fault. She hurt Matt, her boyfriend, fiancee. The love of her life. She should have died back when she were eleven, in that stupid fire. If she had died, like she was suppose to, then her and Matt would have never got together in the first place. Then she would have never ruined his life. Forever. Why did she ever go to Jonathon? Why did she put the boy she was suppose to love at risk, in danger? Why was she so stupid? Why wasn't Marissa locked up? So that she could not hurt anybody else ever again? Matt had every right to hate her. Maybe she should go up to him and tell Matt to kill her, to just put her out of her misery. Maybe she should tell him to end her life so that she can never hurt another person ever again.
After Richard was finished, Marissa had tears streaming down her face. “You just don't get it. You don't even know how I feel. Who says I want to live? Huh? Because I don't. I hurt him. I hurt my Mattie. I love him. So much that it hurts. But I ruined everything. I ruined his life. I am the worst thing that has ever happened to that boy. I don't deserve him. And my mother?! Don't even mention my mother. It should have been me. Me! She died trying to protect me. After I was so horrible to her. Just leave me alone. Please...” she whimpered out. “Just-just-just let me die. Let me finally get what I deserve. My family, my friends, my boyfriend would all be better off if I were dead anyway. Or better yet, would have been better off if I had never been born.”
