February closed her eyes shut. She was not even sure how much this was going to hurt. No one has ever punished her before. But, then again, she had never screwed up this bad before. She grabbed onto the legs of the chair, tightly. And when the wooden sppon hit her, she let out a yelp as tears brimmed her eyes.
Nick sighed and stroked his child's hair. "It'll be okay." he spoke, gently. But when she was okay, she would be getting the biggest whippin' of her life. He followed the tech down the hall.

Shayne hit her, full-force, until she started to darken. Stopping, he stood up. "rinse out your mouth" he said, folding his arms "and go into my room"
When they got there, Carla was given a pad to rest her arm on. "are you pregnant?" the tech asked, and she shook her head.
"not unless I'm the virgin Mary" she spoke, tears in her eyes. The tech nodded and set it up and ran the machine
It took a little while to finish Jessa, but when they did, they didn't allow her to go back into the waiting room. Instead, the nurse called Ben back. He followed, hammering the nurse with "what's wrong? what happened? what did you see?" but she didn't answer. When he got back in the room with her, he was immediately followed by an admissions receptionist
Ben's eyes widened "you're admitting her? why??" he looked at Jessa. What had happened?
"the doctor will be here shortly" the nurse said. Ben groaned
"you always say that. I'm not waiting three hours! I'll hunt him down myself if I have to" he warned her
"just have a seat. He'll be here" she said with a nod before leaving

When Shayne had finally stopped hitting her, February had slid off the chair and sat on the floor, taking the rag out of her mouth. Tears were falling down her face, and she tried to blink them back. "I'm sorry..." she whimpered out, before slowly getting to her feet. She rinse out her mouth and slowly walked out of the room, going into her brother's room.
Nick sat next to his daughter and held her other hand. "It'll be okay, sweetie. Everything will be okay."
Jessa had tried asking what was wrong. But they wouldn't say. Why couldn't they just tell her?! No, all she had said was that she had to get her dad and then she left the room. She felt so scared. And all she wanted was her daddy. All she wanted was to go home. Was something wrong? What if she was dying? It all just scared her so much. She hated feeling this scared.
Biting down on her lip, Jessa brought her feet up on the chair, hugging them tightly. She looked up when her dad walked in and some other adult. She swallowed and looked to her dad and back to the admissions receptionist. "What? Admitting? What's fucking wrong with me?! I don't-I can't-No..." she whispered. She watched as the nurse left and sighed, looking down. If she was even able to cry, she would be in tears right now. That was how scared she was.

Shayne put the spoon back and swallowed before picking up the strap. One thing was for sure, February wouldn't be sitting comfortably anytime soon. He clutched the cross on his necklace and went into his room. Setting the strap down, he sat beside her "you wanna pray to mama?" he asked softly.
once the x-rays were finished, Carla was told to go back to her ER room. She looked up at her daddy and swallowed. "I think I just screwed up my last chance at going to heaven" she said softly. By now, she was feeling pretty damned guilty. God, what had made her think this was a good idea?
Ben sighed and sat beside her on the bed. Pulling her in his arms, he sighed "do you remember the day we met you?" he asked, stroking her hair, kissing her forehead. He needed to keep her calm. He needed to. Because if he did nothing, he wouldn't keep calm. He would end up losing it....and maybe murdering the doctor who was taking years...even though it had only been a couple of minutes. It felt like it.

February didn't even look up. For some reason, she just couldn't. So she just kept staring down at her hands in her lap. Hearing his question, she just nodded. The girl was just too upset to actually speak. But she wanted to pray to mama. She wanted to. She felt like she needed to. She was so scared of going to jail, of doing something even worse. And she didn't want that.
"No, you didn't. Not yet, Carla. But if you continue down this path, you just might screw it up." He said, sternly, getting to his feet. Remaining quiet, he led her back to the room.
Jessa just wanted to cry. She wanted to not be so scared. She rested her head against her dad and nodded. "Yes..." she whispered. "I was 6. I remember not being so sure if you guys wanted me. But I learned, daddy. I wanted you to be my family." She spoke, softly, closing her eyes. "Can you tell me again how you came to having me as your daughter?" she asked, softly. She loved hearing it. She always would. And right now, she needed to hear it.

Shayne took his necklace and put it around her neck. Kissing her head, he reached over and took her hand. "together forever, right?" he asked, nodding to the strap "no matter what happens?" he wanted her to know that he did this because he loved her. He did it because he cared.
Carla got back on the bed and closed her eyes. She knew what she was going to have to do. she was scared. She had never been in this much trouble. But, she trusted her daddy. And she would rather do this than be anywhere near Ben. Wiping her eyes, she looked up at him "I was driving, daddy. I-the police gave February's parents a ticket. You might get one too."
Ben smiled, softly. "well, we had just had a little girl go home to her parents. I was feeling so shattered from some events that happened around that time, and I got a call." Only Chance knew. Not even Marco. He knew how guilty Ben felt. How he had listened to the young girl pour her heart out to him, how her step-dad was abusing her. And how her mother had given her up. And she begged him not to tell anyone. And, wanting to form a bond of trust, Ben had made the promise. The following day, when she was sent home, he kept it. And a week later when she was murdered by her father, Ben was consumed with guilt. He knew that if he had just told the social worker, she would have lived. Chance had been 14 at the time, and Ben relied heavily on his oldest son, and confided in him
That was the day that Ben shut himself off from the world. If the kids screwed up, he handled the yelling and the smacking. Marco handled all of the talking. Ben wasn't going to open himself up like that again. He wasn't going to make any promises or keep any secrets. Because he couldn't handle being the cause of any more deaths. Jessa...she was complicated. She had CIPA. Here was this tiny, fragile little girl. And Ben couldn't let what happened to Sonia happen to her. He had to protect her with his life.
He swallowed, and looked at her. "She told me about your condition. About how we would need to keep a strict eye on you. And make sure that if you fell or anything like that, to take you to the hospital. And I thought--that's perfect. We could do that. We already had Aidan, Matt, Chance, and Jason. We needed a girl" he said with a smile. "Marco wanted to take things slowly. We didn't want to rush you into anything."
His hand went to her neck, picking up the heart locket. Inside, a very young picture of Ben, Marco, and Jessa. And in the other side, a small picture of the seven Del Rossi's....back when there were seven. Now, there was twelve. "I bought this months before he was ready to invite you to join the family. I knew instantly. You were going to be my first daughter"
Ben looked in her eyes. "I remember picking you up. Your wide, brown eyes. Your big, beautiful smile. Even though, technically, your first day ended with a bang" he remembered hearing the crash and the sound of broken glass, and six year old Aidan yelling out something about monsters doing it and hiding under the bed. He never did find out exactly what had happened from any of the three younger kids, and the twelve and fourteen year olds didn't see it.

February looked over at the strap and swallowed, looking down. "Forever..." she whispered, tears in her eyes. She hated this. She hated being in trouble. But what else could she do? "I want mama to be proud.." she spoke, quietly, softly. "I don't want her to be disappointed. I don't want to go to jail..."
Nicholas shook his head. "This is not like you, Carla. Not at all. What's going on with you? Or you unhappy? Is this a cry for help? You have to talk to me."
Jessa smiled, sweetly. "I remember that day. It's a little foggy. But I remembr." And she did. But she couldn't remember quite how she ended up getting hurt. But what could you expect. The girl was only 6 at the time. "I remember...remember wanting a family so much. But nobody wanted a kid with my condition. I was scared...scared that you would be like them too. But I was wrong. And I was glad that I was wrong. Because I loved you. I loved the family. And--" she looked down. "It was nice...to finally have that. That perfect family. Who would always love you no matter what. No matter what you did or said or was."

Shayne closed his eyes "mama...I know you're in heaven watching. Please be with us. Be with Feb. She misses you and--and she deserves this. To be happy. Please don't let this family be torn apart. Even if it's just the two of us, we're still a family"
He opened his eyes and looked at her. "you're going to be ok. You're going to end up going to an ivy league college, if I have to whoop your ass all the way" he smiled softly. "We have to stick together. If Uncle Damian hadn't given me a good one last year, I would have let you. But he's not gonna know from now on. It's me and you. We can parent each other and keep each other in line, right?"
Carla looked at him. "talk to you? I tried. Every time she bullied me, I tried! Every time I got in trouble. I tried telling you it was her. You don't listen. You never listen. You're just like mom. But at least she's got an excuse cause she's never here" she looked down, going quiet. No, she couldn't talk. She took matters into her own hands, because she had to.
Ben chuckled "well, we're not perfect. But at least there's a lot of us. So where some of us are lacking, others make up. So maybe all together, we're almost close" he said ,looking at her. "I know why you were bullying those girls, Jess. And I don't blame you. I'd hate me too"

February nodded and looked down. "Right..." she whispered, before looking back up. "Do you really think that everything will be okay?" she asked, softly. She hoped that he was right. She really waned him to be right.
"You watch it!" He warned his daughter. "When we get you home, you're in big trouble. And you do not take matters into your own hands. You don't have the right to. You're not her parent. And you could have gotten yourselves killed!"
Jessa looked down, biting her lip. "I'm sorry...." she whispered. "I know it was wrong. I was just-I was upset. I was hurt." she shook her head. "I don't hate you, daddy. I could never hate my daddy. I just felt-I thought you abandoned me..." Jessa looked away and sighed. "Am I gonna be punished, daddy? I'm sorry. I tried to make mends and-I'm sorry..."

Shayne sighed and caressed her cheek. "I never thought I'd be ok again after what I did last year. And now look at me. Believe me, you have more hope than you know" he leaned in and kissed her forehead. "Fifty more and we'll be done"
Carla shook her head "how am I supposed to talk to you when you get mad when I do and tell me to watch it? You know what, just--forget it." She folded her arms. "I miss mom" she muttered.
"I think it's going to take more than an apology, Jess. You just gotta give them time. As for being punished," he sighed "if anyone's going to be punished it really should be me. I wasn't there like I should have been"

February nodded and looked down. Hope. She hoped that he was right though. She didn't want to end up in jail or dead. "Yeah." she whispered. "Okay."
Nick shook his head, not saying another word to his daughter. Instead he just sat down next to her and waited as well.
"I know, daddy. But-" she shook her head. "I don't know. Maybe I did deserve this. Maybe Ishould have been hurt worse. Not that it matters. It wouldn't hurt."

Shayne looked at her and sighed "you're gonna be grounded. You know that, right?" he asked her, looking at her. He was doing what he felt was right. And he knew if he screwed up, she'd do the same.
Carla looked at Nick and swallowed. "you should lock the door," she whispered. It would be a while anyway. She knew how hospitals worked. They took forever
Ben opened his mouth to answer her, when the doctor knocked on the door. He sat up, taking his daughter's hand
"Jessa?" the doctor smiled as she looked at her chart. "Hi. Can I steal your dad away for a sec?"
Ben shook his head "no. She deserves to know. Whatever it is, you can say in front of her"

February bit her lip and nodded, before standing up. "I-I know. Can we just get it over with?" She was dreading ever moment that she had to wait. The girl had never been whipped and the girl had never been in trouble. She just wanted it over with.
Nick stood up and walked over, closing the door. He didn't even look at his daughter. He was contemplating how he should punish the 13-year-old.
Jessa bit her lip, and looked up as the doctor walked in. She was about to say that she didn't care when her dad spoke up. So she just looked down and stayed quiet.

Shayne sighed and nodded. Standing up, he took his pillows and laid them on the bed. "Here...bend over this and make sure your butt's in the air" he said uncertainly. But he knew he needed to.
Carla swallowed and bit her lip "d-daddy?" she stuttered nervously. She hated that he wasn't looking at her. She just wanted him to say something, anything. Even if it was yelling. She didn't like to be ignored. Sure, he didn't listen. But she would rather him not believe and not listen to her than ignore her altogether
The doctor nodded "well, unfortunately the tissue has torn back open from her last surgery. Now, while it was dangerous because her blood cells were mixing, this time it's dangerous because her heart is pumping at a much slower rate. We need to operate within the next six hours, or she will die"
Ben's face paled. "oh god" he looked down at her. No. No, he couldn't let that happen. He knew his face was white as a ghost; it had to be. Ben had never been so scared in his life.
"Dr. Meyers is the surgeon on call and he--" she spoke, but Ben cut her off.
"no. No. that's not going to happen. I'm not having some stranger operate on my daughter." he shook his head, looking at Jessa. "Don't be scared. Everything will be ok" he said and stepped out of the room

February swallowed and nodded. Silently, she did as she was told, laying over the pillows.
Nick looked to his daughter for a moment before looking away. He had no idea what to say. He never had to punish his kids a whole lot. "I am very disappointed in you. I thought I raised you better than this." He spoke quietly.
Jessa looked to the doctor with wide eyes? She could die? Jessa may have been acting tough. But she was just scared inside. And Jessa did not want to die. She swallowed and looked to her dad. Don't be scared? How could she not be scared. She just nodded and watched her dad leave the room, before she looked down at the floor.
