Marissa was quite the mischievous 11-year-old. She always caused trouble and got punished a lot. That's what separated her from her twin. And today? Well, her father was away on tour and her mom had to leave to go visit her parents who lived an hour away. So, Emma had called Marco to come and take Marissa and Scott.
At the time, Marissa was in the bathroom, but when she came out she couldn't seem to find anyone. "Hello? Uncle Marco? Mama? Scotty?" Marissa walked downstairs, but she found no one. So, she walked back upstairs and went into her bedroom. But, as she walked into her room the light bulb started the beginning of the fire. A scream escaped her lips and she backed up into a corner of her room. Of course she was scared and she didn't know what to do.
Her bedroom filled up with smoke quickly and Marissa started to feel light-headed as she started to inhale too much smoke everything went back.

Marco was in charge of watching Scott and Marissa. So, he showed up to pick them up and stuck around for a little while before he left. Unfortunately, he was dealing with two extremely hyper 11-year-olds. Aidan and Scott were hyper and practically bouncing off the wall. Aidan had decided that he wanted to show him something every fifteen seconds and Scott usually was joining right in and when he didn't answer them right away, they didn't stop insisting.
Finally, he decided it was time to go and got them both in the car. That was hard enough! He would think that being eleven would be easier to take care of. But with Aidan and Scott? No. It wasn't easier in the least. Aidan was far too hyper-active for his own good sometimes and Scott was a good kid, but Aidan and Scott were both pretty silly together.
They were half-way to Marco's house when Scott spoke up. "Uh-- Uncle Marco?" He asked aloud. "You forgot something." And when he said that, Aidan laughed a little, because he noticed too.
Marco frowned and looked in the rear-view mirror and then at the road again, a little confused as the boys kept laughing and then he remembered. "Marissa!" He cursed and slammed on the breaks before he turned around and headed back. How could he forget a kid?
When he got back to the house, he saw the fire creeping out of one of the windows and the smoke that filled the house. Not even 10 minutes gone and the house was lit on fire? Without even taking the keys out, he jumped out of the car. "You boys stay right there. Don't move--" Then on second thought, he pulled out his cell phone and tossed it to Aidan. "Call 9-1-1." He ran up to the house and into it. "Marissa!" He called out loudly and ran through the rooms. Quickly, he ran up the stairs and towards the girl's room. He used his sleeve to cover his mouth and nose from the smoke, and that's when he saw her. He didn't waste time and got in there and picked her up. "Marissa? Come on, wake up." He said as he tried to get her out of the room before the flames cut him off completely.

However, Marissa did not wake up. Her life seemed to flash before her eyes like an old movie without sound. It was true what they said, about seeing your whole life flash before your eyes. Some things seemed so silly, like her crush on Aidan when she was six. Or spending time with her dad. Or arguing with her twin.
Marissa's breathing seemed irregular and slow. She wasn't really moving either, but the fire was spreading and they needed to get out of there now.

By no means did he plan to let that little girl die. This was his fault, he thought. He had left her alone there. If he had been paying attention, he might not have been able to stop the fire, but she wouldn't be in the house right now. He rightfully took the blame for it, but he wasn't going to let her go. As the flamed spread, he hurried out of the bedroom and to the stairs. The house was filled with smoke, and he coughed, but could hear sirens approaching the house.
He made it to the door, thankfully, and got her onto the front steps of the house. As soon as they were out of the fire, he set her down on the grass outside and checked for a pulse. Lucky for him, the paramedics were acting fast and on the scene.

Marissa could see the bright lights before her. And a voice in the distance, called her name, told her to come into the light. No. I'm scared. Please...I don't wanna go into the light. Was this what it felt like to die? Was this what death was like for everyone?
As Marissa layed on the ground, and as she was being called to the light, for a moment, her heart completely stopped beating.

When he felt for a heartbeat, he felt nothing. No, god, no. "Marissa, come on, don't let go." He pleaded as the paramedics moved in behind him and surrounded her. Instantly, after they discovered that the little girl wasn't breathing, they started to perform CPR.
"Marissa!" A voice yelled from behind as Scott leapt out of the car. Aidan was quickly behind him, calling out to Marco.
"Dad?" As soon as Marco heard the boys' voices though, he turned around.
"Get back in the car now!" He yelled at the two kids. He wasn't about to risk them getting hurt too.

60 seconds: that was how long Marissa had stopped breathing. No! I won't go into the light. The figure walked closer. Go, Marissa. Go. You don't belong here. It's not your time yet.
Finally, Marissa's heart started beating again, and she began coughing because of all the smoke that she inhaled.

"We've got a pulse! We've got a pulse!" Marco had never known just how important those words would be. He heard the paramedics say it and he felt a wave of relief flood over him. Despite it not being over yet. His eyes finally transferred to the burning house, watching as the fire fighters fought to put it out. It felt like everything was moving slowly to him, and the paramedics lifted Marissa up to the stretcher.
"You're going to be all right, kid." One of them said as they placed an oxygen mask over her mouth so that she could breathe easier, after inhaling so much smoke.

Marissa had opened her eyes, looking around slightly. But her vision seemed blurry. She was goig to be alright? Really? Was that even possible? "But--where--" She wanted her dad so much right now. But she couldn't even get any words out, before they placed an oxygen mask over her mouth and nose so that she could breathe easier.

Of course, the doctors would know more when they took her to the hospital. Right now, the paramedics were just trying to ease any fear that the little girl had. Surely, she had to be scared. They thought she was a goner at first. "Are you going to ride with her?" They asked Marco, but Marco couldn't.
"I'll follow behind, I need to call her parents." And he couldn't just leave the other two kids there while he went. He'd drive to the hospital behind the ambulance.

Marissa grew even more scared. No one she knew would be here with her. How much she just so desperately wanted her daddy. Tears streamed down her face, but she was to weak to move so that she could wipe them away. She looked over to Marco and then to her twin brother.

"You'll be okay, we'll be right there, Marissa." Marco promised the little girl. He didn't want her to feel so alone, but he knew she'd be alone when she was in that ambulance.
"We'll take good care of her." The paramedics promised and started to load her into the ambulance. Marco ran back to his car and climbed into the car. He looked at the two boys.
"Is she okay?" Scott asked, and Marco nodded.
"She'll be okay." He hoped. He started up the car so he could follow the ambulance.

Marissa looked up at Marco as he said she would be okay. but she didn't reply. She just nodded, ever so slightly. Would she be okay? She remembered seeing the light? Was Marissa close to death? As the paramedics loaded her into the ambulance, she rested her eyes, feeling tired.

Marco followed the ambulance to the hospital. Once they were there, he got the boys out. "Don't run off." He told them since they had a habit of just 'getting lost' sometimes. When they got there, he had Aidan and Scott wait in the waiting room while he tried to get a hold of Marissa's mom, but at the present couldn't. So, he went to find where they were bringing her.

They had to take Marissa to a room in ICU. Why? She could barely breathe on her own. She had an IV in her arm and an oxygen mask over her mouth to help her breath. She tried to look around, but it was kind of hard to move. There was no one in the room, and only being eleven, that scared her.
