Natasha stood backstage. She couldn't stop thinking about her boyfriend Warner's words when she told him about her audition
"come on, you're never gonna get in. You're just not good enough sweetie"
Natasha sighed. She was good enough--she knew it! She looked down at her lucky bracelet that her best friend Tiffany had given her. She giggled as she remembered the day she left. Tiffany and their other best friend Kelly were seeing her off at the airport
here, take my lucky bracelet. It got me a B in Spanish last year" Tiffany had said
"you got a B in Spanish because you gave the teacher a lap dance" Kelly reminded her
"yeah. Luckily!" she had said in a duh tone
"Natasha Simpson?"
Natasha looked up and nodded. She walked onto stage
"let's see you dance first"
Natasha exhaled as she waited for the music to come on. It was a song from Cats, Macavity. Natasha focused on every move, not noticing anything else. When she was done, she was proud to say that she did it without messing up.
Then it was time to sing. She nodded and as the music began, she opened her mouth to sing
"take back the books and pack up the clothes
clean out the room and turn in the key
leave-"
as soon as she went to a slightly higher note, she squeaked out of nerves. She cleared her throat "sorry" she said and the woman nodded for her to continue
"leave with what's left of my dignity.
Get in the car and just go
Chalk it all up to experience
they said I'd fail but I disagreed
who then-" and she squeaked again. Without waiting for permission, she continued
"who then could say-" and she did it again!
"I think we've heard enough" the man said
"no, wait, that's just the first half of one verse!"
"Miss Simpson, your dancing is incredible. But your singing needs more training-"
"I've had six years of training, sir. I'm just nervous"
"yes, and you will be nervous every time you go on stage. I'm sorry. I don't think you have what it takes to work with us on Broadway"
Natasha was crushed. She ran off the stage and out the door. The recruits had come to Toronto, so at least she wasn't lost in New York or anything. She kept running until she was at the park. She fell to her knees beside the bench and started crying, burying her head in her arms on the bench
