The announcement during third period was no news to some and a complete shock to others. It was a half-day, so this was the last period of the day. They were also combining classes today, so Hazel was seeing quite a few fresh faces. It made what she was about to do even harder. Still, she knew it needed to be done. So as soon as the bell rang, she cleared her throat. "everyone, try and find a seat. Anywhere is fine. Shayne, could you close the door? Guys, I need your attention. I'm afraid I have some upsetting news. A studnt was the victim of a murder attempt this weekend. Her name is Megan Del Rossi. Now, some of you may know Megan. So, for anyone who is interested, she's in the ICU. Visiting hours are resstrictive, but she can have visitors"
The room went silent. Hazel didn't continue just yet. She wanted to let them process it. Instead, she waited for a hand to raise. When one did, it was Shayne. "so....she's alive, right??" his voice was a mixture of shock and ready to cry. Shayne hadn't even been home to watch the news. He had been in New York for the weekend. He had no clue anything had even happened. So when he heard the announcement, he froze. He hadn't even moved an inch. His hand was still on the door handle. He just couldn't believe it. It was just so unreal. Even as his hand raised, it didn't seem like it was him. It was like there was a string attached to his sleeve, pulling him upwards. Not Megan. It couldn't be Megan. He loved that girl! He couldn't bear the thought of her being murdered.
JJ was one of the kids who already knew about it. Of course, his mom practically gave an after-school special. The woman had decided to sit him, Ian, Connor, Mitchie, and Cassandra down and talk about how they can avoid certain parts of the city to stay safe. But if something were to happen, they needed to be prepared to exercise self-defense. And then, despite being able to beat anyone to a pulp who so much as looked at him wrong, she taught them all some moves. It wasn't optional, either. JJ thought it was so stupid. But did he dare tell his mother that? Of course not. Because nobody argued with Larisa DiMarco. When the announcement was given, he fell silent, out of lack for words. When Shayne spoke up. "No shit, Sherlock. Why would there be visiting hours for a dead person"
Willow and Rachel had been watching an award show the night that Megan's story came on the news. It wasn't like the queen bee had a choice in the matter. All that was said about it was that the plan would be postponed for now. Willow wouldn't talk about deep things like that. Her world was much simpler, and she wasn't going to deal with it. Rachel was the one who shot Shayne a look of disgust. "seriously, how dumb can you be?"
Willow's attention was on Megan's boyfriend. Jack was staring at his shoes, wide-eyed. And honestly, he looked like he was going to cry. Now, she, like most of her classmates, thought that he was mourning the near loss of his girlfriend. But that wasn't it at all. Jack had been avoiding the news all weekend. Normally, he'd be relishing his work. But not this time. This time, he had failed miserably. And after keeping the tv off all weekend, he had to hear that dumb announcement. His failure was being shoved in his face. And that left him unnerved and upset. But, since Willow had no idea, she reached over and touched his thigh. "aww, poor Jack! I can't imagine what you're going through!"
Jack didn't want to be touched. He wondered what would happen if he broke one of his rules. Just one. Just the one about not targeting popular kids. Right now, he'd love to drag her by the hair to his shed. Take that hand that was touching him and pry off every last one of those, one by one. He'd smile into her brown, fear-filled eyes. can you imagine now? and then he'd make her scream--
He caught a glare from Matt. Jack had no idea that the fireworks that were set off in his house were set off by Matt. He just assumed that it was because she was touching him. He sent the boy back a look of innocence before looking at Willow. "don't touch me" his words were pressed, because he was upset, even if it was for a different reason than everyone thought.
Matt didn't find out about his sister the same way that the rest of the family did. Unlike everyone else, who found out by either one of their fathers or because they recieved a phone call from Mallory or a doctor, Matt didn't find out until he was allowed to go home. He got in the car, and right after being told that he was grounded, Ben whapped him upside his head and said "because of your stunt, he almost killed Megan. I hope you're satisfied." obviously, he wasn't. And now,as he sat there listening to the story again, he glared at Jack, ignoring everyone else. That is, until Jack looked back at him. Shaking his head, he rolled his eyes. That was when he caught Marissa in the corner of his eye. He looked at her, but didn't speak. After a moment, he looked down.
The news hit harder for the head cheerleader than one would expect. Sitting beside her sister, the blonde cupped her hand over her mouth. "no," she whimpered out. But it wasn't because of her. It was her sister. Ever since Alexis was kidnapped, and she watched Tyler die, everything had changed. Augusta never wanted to come that close to losing her again. But that was beyond the point. Alexis had watched her boyfriend die. How was she going to handle this announcement? Augusta looked at her sister.
Mary considered herself blessed that her father was strict when it came to the television. If she knew that there was a serial killer, she would be tempted to ask to return to Africa. Mary didn't know how to deal with it. She was barely able to deal with the deaths of her older brother and then her mother. The sixteen year old hugged her bible as she stared ahead, unable to take her eyes off Hazel. "that poor girl! Is it ok to go pray with her?"
Oceana's jaw dropped. "Scooter??" she swallowed, looking at Matt. "Hello?? Best friend here. You couldn't have told me?" Oceana would have thought that someone would have called her. She might have been dating Matt's rival, but that was no excuse. She had a right to know. She had been friends with Megan since the night they met, and they took off to the park. That was a million years ago. Before Brandon ever came in her life. So if Matt even thought about using who her boyfriend was as an excuse, she was going to punch him. Actually, she might, anyways. He didn't tell her! Her best friend was in the hospital and she never knew. Someone was going to be punched.
Mike was usually peppy. He wasn't gay like jerkoffs like Ali Bhandari assumed and taunted him over. But he believed in school spirit, and as a result, he was the only male cheerleader on the squad. He was a lot like Natasha, except he knew how to be serious. So when he came to class, he was smiling and laughing like usual, taking a seat beside his captain. And then that announcement...Mike clenched his fist and punched the desk he was sitting at, standing up. He walked over to the window, looking out. His eyes filled with tears. "why would anyone do that??" What the hell? Megan might not have been the nicest girl at times, but she didn't deserve to die. He just couldn't see anyone ever wanting to hurt her.
